Ongoing Responsibilities:

  • Build relationships with interested clients (no cold calling)
  • Meet daily metrics and monthly sales targets
  • Meet with families to ensure you understand their needs
  • Maintain a healthy sales pipeline through relationship building, consistent follow- up, and scheduling appointments during and outside of regular business hours
  • Attend partnership and company events and networking events to expand awareness of our reputation and services

Horticulturist

Department: Arboretum

Wage & Hour Status: Full Time / Non-Exempt

Supervisor: Senior Horticulturist

Job Summary:

The Horticulturist is responsible for providing active oversight of garden areas along Belmont Avenue at West Laurel Hill Cemetery, including but not limited to Telford Gardens, Makom Shalom, Hero’s Memorial, Chesed Shel Emet, Southlawn and Lower Merion Synagogue sections. This position will be responsible for maintaining these areas to a high standard of horticulture, overseeing seasonal staff and interns, and assisting with the improvement, preservation and curation of the Living Collection.

Essential Functions:

  • Maintain gardens, shrubs, and small trees in designated focus area along Belmont Ave to a high degree of aesthetic quality; manage watering, weeding, and planting needs; design garden renovations and improvements as needed; inspect area regularly for maintenance needs including weeds, pest and disease concerns.
  • Use Horticultural Best Management Practices to manage plant and soil health; use Integrated Pest Management to limit chemical use as much as possible; practice and implement sustainable land management practices in keeping with the organization’s commitment to sustainability.
  • Meet regularly with Arboretum Manager and Senior Horticulturist to determine work assignments, plan and coordinate projects, personnel and contractor needs, garden design and budgetary requirements.
  • Work with the Arboretum Manager to keep Living Collection inventory and curation fully up to date using inventory software in the field.
  • Oversee seasonal horticulturists, horticulture interns, and volunteers for general maintenance of garden areas; provide opportunities for intern education; build positive experience for seasonal staff through mentorship and encouragement.
  • Work with staff in all cemetery departments as needed, including working with operations staff to facilitate their ability to mobilize and dig burials (i.e. occasionally pruning or moving plants may be necessary); planning work to avoid funeral services; communicating with Family Service Representatives bringing families to observe these sections, etc.
  • Assist in Horticulture-related programming, including occasional tours, virtual programming, and on-site programs as needed.
  • Maintain working knowledge of all plant taxa in designated area, current Best Management Practices, innovative sustainable maintenance techniques, and overall land management through research and education.
  • Assist Arboretum Manager and Senior Horticulturist in all other Arboretum duties and responsibilities as needed, at West Laurel Hill Cemetery or Laurel Hill Cemetery.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 5 years in public gardens or private horticulture preferred.
  • Minimum of 2 years in a supervisory role of landscape or garden staff preferred.
  • Experience with use and safety of a wide array of hand- and power-tools required.
  • High School graduate or GED required; minimum of a bachelor’s degree in horticulture or related field preferred.

Knowledge and Abilities Required:

  • Knowledge of cultivated taxa and horticulture Best Management Practices.
  • Knowledge of proper tool use and maintenance.
  • Ability to work independently or in a group setting; under direction from supervisors and/or in a supervisory role.
  • Efficient and effective management of daily and weekly tasks.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills:
    • Ability to communicate progress and requests to supervisors as well as needs and duties to seasonal staff and interns, all in a courteous and professional manner.
    • Ability to communicate respectfully with visitors, mourners, contractors, and staff of all departments.
  • Physical ability to lift at least 60 lbs. and work in all weather conditions including rain, snow, and extreme heat or cold.
  • Dedication to reliably showing up to work on time Monday-Friday 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM
    • Willingness to occasionally work weekends or overtime as requested and approved by Arboretum Manager

Grounds Maintenance

Reporting to the Superintendent, the primary responsibilities of the position are general cemetery & landscape maintenance to include burial set-ups, assisting backhoe operator with digging graves, monument cleaning, setting new monuments, restoring/repairing old monuments, snow removal, general landscape maintenance, and support of public/private events.Weekend hours required.

Requirements of both positions include:

  • Ability to work outdoors in extreme weather
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds
  • Strong work ethic
  • Valid drivers’ license
  • A minimum of one-year landscaping and/or masonry experience
  • A willingness to learn all aspects of cemetery maintenance and masonry
