Assistant Superintendent

Historic Laurel Hill Cemetery and West Laurel Hill Cemetery & Funeral Home have an exciting opportunity for an experienced Assistant Superintendent. West Laurel Hill Cemetery, located in Bala Cynwyd, was founded in 1869 and is an active historic cemetery with a funeral home as well as a community resource and recreational space. Laurel Hill Cemetery, located in Philadelphia, is a 78-acre National Historic Landmark.

Reporting to the Superintendent, The Assistant Superintendent manages of the functions of the Operations Department’s grounds crew to include daily grounds maintenance, burial and cremation activity, and support of public/private events while ensuring a clean, safe, and enjoyable environment for all visitors as well as vision, leadership, and strategic thinking to help drive inspiration and success.

Essential functions

  • With the Superintendent, develops annual work plans for grounds operations and establishes weekly priorities of work. In doing so, determines most efficient use of staff and equipment and ensures full compliance of the Operations Department with standard operating procedures, policies, and service standards of the organization. Reviews work for timeliness, accuracy, completeness, and efficiency.
  • Manages grounds operations to include burial & cremation activity, coordination of grave openings & closings, snow removal, fulfillment of work orders, equipment repairs, holiday decoration ordering/placement, and recycling. Provides support for property sales activities as needed.
  • Ensures activities of the grounds crew are carried out safely, and with the highest quality and care for our customers. Ensures timely adherence to OSHA, DEP and other federal, state, and local rules and regulations; reports all safety issues.
  • Coordinates with event and program staff to ensure facilities are prepared, adequately staffed, in safe working order and properly dismantled upon conclusion.
  • Serves as the department’s ambassador to the public and works effectively with other departments to ensure a clean, safe, and positive experience for all users of our cemeteries and funeral home; handles external complaints or issues concerning operations.
  • Performs various administrative duties as assigned by Superintendent, including but not limited to procurement of operating supplies and uniforms, monitoring staff certification and training schedules, coordinating custodial services & contracts, monitoring operations contracts and payments to third party vendors, etc.
  • Participates in preparation of operating and capital budgets and monitors the department’s annual operating budget.
  • Contributes to an operating environment that assures respect and teamwork, develops strategies to maintain employee productivity and improve the quality of our products and services and helps everyone reach their full potential.
  • Effectively coordinates and communicates with others in the Operations Department, especially with the Facilities & Capital Project Manager and Arboretum Manager, as well as with all other organizational departments.
  • Actively engages in the organization’s sustainability efforts and helps implement sustainable goals and practices.
  • Serves as second responder in the rotation to attend to all after hours emergency calls, including alarms, customer assistance, gate operation, etc.


  • Minimum of ten years of experience in operations management
  • Bachelor’s degree in management or related field required.
  • Strong attention to detail, excellent communication skills, ability to plan and develop creative solutions to challenges, and strong computer skills.

Grounds Maintenance

Reporting to the Superintendent, the primary responsibilities of the position are general cemetery & landscape maintenance to include burial set-ups, assisting backhoe operator with digging graves, monument cleaning, setting new monuments, restoring/repairing old monuments, snow removal, general landscape maintenance, and support of public/private events. Weekend hours required.

Requirements of both positions include:

  • Ability to work outdoors in extreme weather
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds
  • Strong work ethic
  • Valid drivers’ license
  • A minimum of one-year landscaping and/or masonry experience
  • A willingness to learn all aspects of cemetery maintenance and masonry
